An MRI a week after the Super Bowl reveals that Roethlisberger played with fractured ribs



The broken ribs that were discovered during Ben Roethlisbergers MRI this week reportedly did not show up on X-rays taken before the Steelers Super Bowl victory on Feb. 1st. Big Ben reports that even though the fractures did not show up on his X-rays the previous week, he knew something was wrong. "Just suck it up and play" was the mindset of Roethlisberger Super Bowl Sunday.


Roethlisberger did not miss any practices the week prior to the Super Bowl, although he did miss one practice the week before because of what his teammates say was a back injury.


"There's not a whole lot to say," said Steelers spokesperson Dave Lockett on Monday. "Ben was fine to go. He was cleared to play. He didn't miss any time. There was no doubt he was going to play."




Even though Roethlisberger had fractured ribs, his teammates agree that it would have been very difficult for him to perform better than he did Super Bowl Sunday, who lead his sixth and final scoring touchdown drive of the season when he connected with Santonio Holmes on a 35 yarder with 2:37 left in the final minutes of the Super Bowl.


This isn't the first time that there have been rumors of inuries to Roethlisberger. Numerous times during the season Roethlisberger reported injuries thats were quickly extinguished by former coach Bill Cowher and Steelers spokespeople. After Bill Cowher resigned after the 2006 season Roethlisberger admit that he and Bill Cowher did not have the best relationship because Cowher often times thought Roethlisberger exaggerated his injuries.


"Ben's health is often the subject of inaccurate reports," coach Mike Tomlin said before the Super Bowl. "He's fine."

The Pittsburgh Steelers capped off their season with a huge win in Tampa on Sunday over the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in Super Bowl XLIII. For the first three quarters of the game, it looked like it was going to be another victory for the Steelers, until the Cardinals staged what looked like one of the greatest comebacks in Super Bowl history. They moved the ball 83 yards downfield to put 7 on the board.

It was looking good for the Cardinals until James Harrisons 100 yard interception run for a touchdown right before the half. The play knocked the wind out of the Cardinals sails when they should have been going into the second half with a 14-10 lead over Pittsburgh, were now down 17-7.

The third quarter was littered with Cardinal penalties. Arizona racked up three personal fouls worth 34 yards. They got called for a facemask, roughing the passer, and a big penalty when Adrian Wilson ran over Steeler place holder Mitch Berger.

The Cardinals weren't finished yet. They were given new hope when Kurt Warner connected with Larry Fitzgerald on a 64 yard touchdown catch with 2:37 to go. This put the score at 21-20
with Arizona in the lead.

However, the Arizona lead was short-live when the game ended with a game winning connection
between Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes with 35 seconds left. Holmes made a beautiful catch to win it for the Steelers.

The MVP Award was presented to Santonio Holmes, who definetly earned it. Holmes had nine catches for 131 yards, four of them on the winning 78-yard drive and the Steelers celebrate their sixth Lombardi Trophy and Super Bowl win.
